Munich Airport Soars to New Heights with 6.2 Million Passengers This Summer

Thursday, September 12, 2024

As the Bavarian summer holidays come to a close, Munich Airport reports impressive traffic numbers: Over the past six weeks, the airport welcomed 6.2 million passengers, marking a 10% increase compared to last year. The busiest day was Sunday, September 1st, with 143,000 passengers passing through the airport. This surge in air travel demand was reflected in an outstanding load factor of 86% for aircraft, setting a new record. During the holiday season, airlines conducted 46,000 takeoffs and landings at Munich, a 7.6% rise from the previous year’s summer.

The airport achieved 91% of the passenger volume recorded in 2019, with intercontinental travel to North America surpassing 2019 levels by 14%. Additionally, traffic to and from Mediterranean countries returned to pre-crisis levels.

In Terminal 2, used by Lufthansa and its partners, passenger numbers during the holiday period exceeded pre-crisis figures on 19 occasions.

Despite facing delays and extended wait times due to thunderstorms and airspace restrictions across Europe, the airport’s streamlined processes and rapid onboarding of new staff ensured smooth operations. The increasing digitalization of services also played a crucial role in expediting procedures. Approximately one-third of departing passengers utilized self-service luggage machines, and the enhanced use of automated passport control and modern CT scanners improved efficiency. Regular operations continued despite spatial constraints from ongoing security control modernization, with most of the Central Security Control upgrades in Terminal 2 expected to be completed by the end of the year.
